IIT Bangalore – HP LABS INDIA PhD FELLOWSHIP

Ph.D. at IIIT-B:-
This Fellowship is in the are of information Technology relevent to education sauch as Web 2.0 Candidates selected for this fellowship will work it IIITB with an opportunity to intern each year at HP Labs India.Candidates will be paid a monthly stipend of RS 25000

The doctoral program involves required and elective coursework, passing of examinations testing the candidate's depth and breadth of understanding, and the writing and oral defense of a dissertation describing a significant body of original research. The duration of time required to earn the doctorate may be estimated as 3 to 5 years, depending on the topic chosen and the candidate.

The usual minimum qualification required is a 1st class four-year degree in a technical discipline (i.e., a 1st class B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent), but people holding 1st class Master's degrees in the mathematical sciences (e.g. an M.Sc. in mathematics, physics, statistics, or electronics) may also apply. Ordinarily, applications from candidates holding Master's degrees in a technical discipline (i.e. an M.E., M.Tech, or equivalent) will be preferred, but candidates who possess just the minimum qualification but show great aptitude for research may be considered. Such candidates may sometimes also be advised to pursue the M.S. by Research first, prior to being accepted into the Ph.D. program.

For candidates applying to do research in the Political Economy of Information Technology, a 1st class Master's degree in social sciences (M.A. or equivalent in anthropology, business management, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology or related disciplines) is acceptable. Candidates with 1st class M.Phil. degrees are especially welcome to apply.

International Applicants
International applicants who hold degrees from recognized universities abroad are eligible to apply provided they can demonstrate the research potential expected of successful applicants. International applicants will also have to rigorously comply with all relevant laws and governmental formalities concerning emigration and immigration. They are expected to fund their own travel, and may in some cases not be eligible for fellowships and scholarships.

Admission Procedure
Admission to the Ph.D. program at IIIT-B will be on the basis of submitted records of prior academic work and other scholarships showing aptitude for research, letters of recommendation, and a personal interview.

Applications may be made throughout the year, but candidates wishing to start in Fall 2008 must apply no later than March 15, 2008 to be assured of full consideration.

How to Apply
Submit the following with a covering letter giving a summary, to the Registrar, IIIT-B, 26/C Electronics City, Hosur Road, Bangalore 560 100.
# Transcripts or attested copies of prior academic work, and copies of any published papers.
# A statement of purpose of between 1000-2000 words, indicating research goals and prior research experience
# A non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 (USD $50 in case of international applicants), in the form of a demand draft payable to IIIT-Bangalore.
# In addition, arrange to have three letters of recommendation supporting the application sent directly to the Registrar. (Such letters should be from former professors, research supervisors, or other qualified people familiar with the applicant and able to describe and attest to his scholastic ability and aptitude for first-rate research.)

Note: Applications that are not accompanied by the required fee, or are incomplete in other respects, will not be considered.
Fees & Financial Aid
The tuition fee for all IIIT-B programs is Rs. 50,000 per semester. Full financial support, covering tuition and a stipend of Rs. 12,000-18,000 per month, is available for Ph.D. students in the form of teaching and research assistantships, Institute scholarships, and industry fellowships. Industry support is usually dependent on the student's research interest aligning with the sponsor's, and the terms, duration, and benefits of support vary. Financial support is not available to working students.

Students who have financial support from their employers or other sources for Ph.D. studies should indicate this fact in their covering letter, as it may improve their chances of acceptance.
